Welcome to your weekend!
It’s Fab Five Friday when you get to see five of my favorite things this week. Enjoy!
Watch & Listen: Erik Evensen is a skilled artist. He created a graphic novel from the Norse myths. It turns out he also provided illustrations to accompany The Bemidji State University Wind Ensemble as they performed the “Twilight of the Gods” by Andrew Boysen, Jr. This is a wonderful way to experience the powerful musical performance as you are taken into the images of Ragnarok!
Virtues: Pagan paths teach virtues in an effort to avoid dogma. Perseverance, the ability to push on when the going gets tough, is one of those virtues. John Beckett wrote 6 Benefits of Perseverance. This post should be read by anyone on a Pagan and Heathen path.
Meditation: Have you seen the latest news about adult coloring books? They’re a great idea! It also appears that some people believe they’re as good as meditation. Friends, I’m sorry to disagree. Meditation is learning a great deal about your own mind by using your own mind. I have nothing against coloring, or many other activities, but they are not meditation. Here’s a great post by Jason Miller, the Strategic Sorcerer himself, weighing in on the issue. Here’s a hint. He’s very pro meditation.
Self Defense: I’ve had the honor of training with a multiple world champion of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Jack McVicker. BJJ is an art that revolutionized martial arts at large both in and out of the cage of MMA. I consider self defense a vital skill for all Pagans and Heathens. You may not agree, but I promise you that there are people in the world who would like to hurt you. I suggest giving yourself a chance. You may never need it. I hope you never need it. Go learn more about yourself, your body, and how to defend yourself anyway. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an excellent place to start. Stephan Kesting of Grapple Arts put together a great post of the 16 most important techniques for the BJJ beginner. I like all of them he listed. Enjoy!
Heathens Speak Out: In the wake of a horrifying plot to commit crimes based on race, Heathens are scrambling to make sure these criminals don’t stain the name of Asatru and Heathenism. The Wild Hunt Blog collected and published several statements from various Heathen organizations today. It saddens me that this type of extreme crime is what it takes to get the discussion started on the problem of racism in some corners of American Heathenry. There is too much silence on this important matter. Separatist ideas of race in religion which is prevalent in a great deal of American Heathenry is fertile breeding ground for people like this. Add in the ideas of Mexican conquest as promoted by one Heathen leader, and snide remarks about preemptive strikes on “the other side of town” by a recent podcast, and plenty of other similar incidents. You’ll have an atmosphere that attracts these types of people. There needs to be a movement that starts with zero tolerance of ignorant excuses for racism from outright crime all the way to subtle separatist propaganda.
