An insight into change discovered by NLP is people either move away from what they want to avoid or go towards their desired goals. One of those will be the motivation that fuels your change.
You know when you hear the call. Whatever you’re doing isn’t working. It isn’t fulfilling. The thought of walking away is painful and scary. The unknown feels like a monster waiting to ruin all you have and hold dear. You look into your hands and realize all you hold dear is an illusion that no longer serves your needs. Will that be all you need to start walking?
The vision and dreams of a better tomorrow pull at you until you drop what’s in front of you. Your current direction might be comfortable, but there could be more rewards if you take the risk to walk. You could stay. You look at the vision, ignore the risk, and chase the deeper dream. Would you take that chance?
I spent three years trying to make a local Walk for Diabetes work. It shrunk with each year until I had to wonder if the time and effort was rewarding enough despite my emotional attachment. That’s when the vision of a better way struck me. I could bring together my passion for skating with my goals of fundraising for the JDRF. I had to be willing to abandon what I was already doing, I had to take a risk, and step into the unknown. I heard the call and I answered. That’s how the Skate For Diabetes was born.
There’s no promise of reward for change. When the time comes, there’s only a choice to move away from what you don’t want or chase what you desire.
